  • Ben Affleck said that his marriage to Jennifer Garner partly resulted in him drinking too much alcohol.

  • During an appearance on “The Howard Stern Show,” Affleck said he felt “trapped” in his marriage.

  • “I can’t leave because of my kids, but I’m not happy… What do I do?” He remembers.

Ben Affleck said “part of the reason” he got drunk was because he felt “trapped” in his marriage to Jennifer Garner.

While promoting his movie “The Tender Bar”, Affleck appeared virtually on “The Howard Stern Show”. Speaking of his ex-wife, Affleck said, “We broke up. We got married and it didn’t work out. And it’s happening.”

Affleck went on to say that they tried to make it work because they had kids.

“And you know what, we probably ended up going each other’s throats,” he said. “Maybe I still drank alcohol – which is part of the reason I started drinking – because I was trapped.”

He continued, “I said: I can’t leave because of my children, but I’m not happy. What do I do?” What I did was drink a bottle of scotch on the couch, which turned out not to be the answer.”

As previously reported by Insider, Affleck has been open in the past about his experience with alcoholism after first entering rehab in 2001. Last year, Affleck told the New York Times that he started drinking more during marital problems with Garner.

Affleck and Garner began dating in 2004, married in 2005, and separated in 2015 before ending their divorce in 2018.

Garner reportedly encouraged Affleck to seek help before spending 40 days in rehab in 2018.

Affleck told Stern that eventually, he and Garner ended the marriage “amicably.”

“Have we had tense moments?” He said. “Have we had custody disputes? Were things difficult for us? Did we get angry? Yes.”

He continued, “But basically it was always backed by respect. I knew she was a good mother. And I hope she knows I was a good father. I was. I had to be sober – I knew that too – and she acknowledged this, I said, ‘You’re right.'” I have to stop drinking.”

The couple share three children: Violet, 15, Seraphina, 12, and Samuel, 9.

“The Tender Bar” will be shown in select theaters starting December 17 and on Amazon Prime starting January 6, 2022.
