Celebrities are obsessed with this cake Tom Cruise gifts famous friends each Christmas — so I tried it

Tom Cruise cake is back – I can say for sure that it’s delicious.

Rosie O’Donnell has said that getting paid every year, from her old boyfriend “Tommy,” officially kicks off the Christmas season at her home. Well, fa la la la la la la because he arrived at Chez O’Donnell on Wednesday.

O’Donnell even answered a few questions about the delicacy—taken at the family-owned Doan’s Bakery in Woodland Hills, California, and shipped worldwide to the folks on Cruise’s awesome list—Ross told Matthew that it tastes “delicious.” “

Celebrities — including Kirsten Dunst, Renée Zellweger, Angela Bassett, James Corden, Jimmy Fallon, Henry Cavill, Cobie Smulders and Graham Norton — love to talk about being on Cruise’s menu and how “incredible” and Decadent tasting good baked goods. For the part, Cruz—presented by then-wife Katie Holmes to the cake she learned from Diane Keaton (it’s a good story)—said in 2018, “Send [cakes] To everyone..and I’m waiting for calls, “from the recipients calling him to tell him how good it was.” I’m like: Tell me about it.

Constant chatter about “Tom Cruise’s cake” led me to call Eric Duane, who runs Dune with his 79-year-old mother Karen, and he gave me the scoop on this celebrity-approved cooking concoction. It’s a coconut cake with sweet white chocolate chunks, layers of cheese frosting and topped with toasted coconut flakes, that Karen created and debuted in 1984 when she first opened her business.

It also led this writer, after writing a story on the cake and staring at photos of it for “research,” to order one, via food shipping service GoldBelly, to try it out. I’m happy to report that it was worth all the hype – and waited two months to get it.

For $99, including shipping, the cake was sent frozen and packed with dry ice from the bakery. I couldn’t resist letting it melt enough to cut a slice straight away – because I had been waiting literally months to try it. It’s a coconut dream come true – and that comes from someone who’s not even a big fan of coconut.

Being the only person to eat coconut cake in a small house, he was enjoyed zigzag fashion during the pandemic with no one to share with. I store it in the freezer, tip at Cruise’s Jack Richer Share star Smulders, who hoards on pickup each year below 32 degrees and then slowly rolls away from December through March for Cruise’s Interview with a vampire Star Dunst, who said she gets into it right away with the family and it ends in one night. I’d cut a little bit here and there – a little goes a long way because it’s so sweet! It keeps in the freezer for four months. (I actually kept it for longer than the recommended four months and it was still delicious.)

For the record, you agreed not to share it. Each time I had a piece that I would formally take out of the box, open it up, unscrew the tape and let it melt just enough to get a knife to cut it. Then quickly fill in the rest of the cake so I can keep my A-list dessert party for as long as possible.

The cake, shipped from a gourmet food delivery service, measures 10 inches in size and serves 12 to 16. I’d even say 20 because a small slice saturates. It’s also important to note that if Tom Cruise doesn’t send you the cake, the box won’t come fully decorated like O’Donnell’s with bow and reindeer decoration. Eric Baker previously explained to Yahoo that Cruz has employees of his Odin Productions pick up the finished cakes and take them elsewhere to wear. Then Odin hands it over to those on Cruise’s specially star-studded list of vacations.

If you’re in Los Angeles and go to Doan’s, the bakery sells smaller sizes. Plus, a 10-inch cake costs $50 at the bakery for $99 with Goldbelly marked up. Just note, at Doan’s you won’t see “Tom Cruise’s cake” anywhere on the menu. Although this nickname was taken because many celebrities have promoted it, the business is not advertised in this way. It’s simply white chocolate coconut cake – one of the 30 cakes on the list.

Moreover, they are familiar with celebrity clients. Sofia Vergara, a lover of sweets, is also a fan of coconut cake (this photo says it all) and the bakery, in general, has other famous patrons, such as Jennifer Lopez, who ordered custom cakes there for the birthday of twins Max and Emmy.

Cruise buys a few hundred cakes during the holidays but also orders them during the year. The star once sent for Corden the morning the comedian hosted the Grammys. Corden said sarcastically that he was barely even wearing his suit that night. Owner Eric has credited Cruz for helping her “keep us in business,” especially during the pandemic.

After writing my story on cake last year, I wasn’t the only one who couldn’t resist buying one. For a few months after my story was published, people texted me to report that they had visited Doan to get one or also ordered it online. “Got a cruise cake!!!!” They reported – with so many exclamation points I imagined them jumping up and down on the sofa with a box of cakes in hand.

Or maybe that’s how I felt when I finally got pregnant and got my first bite.
