Jamie Spears Asks Britney to Pay For Lawyers After Conservatorship End

While the guardianship era is officially over, Jamie Spears and Britney’s lawyers continue to struggle about her future — and if it were up to her father, she’d still pay his legal fees in the process.

In court documents obtained by Variety on December 20, 2021, Britney’s father petitioned for his daughter’s estate to continue to pay his attorney’s fees despite her being suspended from serving as her guardian. According to the filing, he is seeking “confirmation, authorization, and direction” of the court to compel Britney’s estate to pay the fees of attorneys “engaged in proceedings relating to Jimmy’s continuing fiduciary duties relating to the termination of” the guardianship. Britney’s lawyer, Matthew Rosengart, called the request “distasteful.”

“Mr. Spears made millions from Britney as a bouncer, while paying his attorneys millions more, all from Britney’s work and hard-earned money. Spears was shamefully suspended.” The pop star’s lawyer added, “Under the circumstances, his petition is not only without legal basis, it is abhorrent. Britney has given a moving testimony about the pain her father has caused her and it only increases her. It’s not what a father who loves his daughter does.”

Jamie’s request comes just weeks after his failed attempt to “access Britney’s property plan” at a recent court hearing. According to Variety, Jamie – who was the trustee of Britney’s estate from 2008 to 2021 – was denied. Britney’s certified public account attorney, John Zabel, suggested that Jimmy’s request was out of the ordinary. According to Variety, Zabel’s attorney told the court, “In a normal situation, a normal person would never have to show their property blueprint.” Meanwhile, Jimmy’s lawyer told the court: “I suggest we act like adults.”

So far, Jamie made at least $5 million from Britney’s guardianship before her termination in November 2021, according to Forbes. According to court documents reviewed by the publication, Britney has had to pay her father $16,000 a month since February 2009 as her guardian. In 12 years, this amount was equal to $2.4 million. Regarding his legal fees, Britney’s attorney claimed in court documents filed in August 2021 that Jamie spent more than $1.3 million in attorney fees from October 2020 to June 2021 alone. He also alleged that Jimmy solicited $541,000 last year for “media matters” as Britney’s bodyguard. “There has been a clear dissipation of Mrs. Spears’ assets, and that dissipation continues,” he said at the time.

During a court hearing in June 2021, Britney accused Jamie and other members of her family of living on her for years. “Considering that my family has outlived my regency for 13 years, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone had something to say. [against ending my conservatorship]she said at the time. “I just don’t like feeling like I’m working for the people I’m paying for.” Now, you won’t have to.
