Keanu Reeves discusses Sad Keanu and why he’s so damn memeable

Keanu Reeves is a movie star. Watch movies The Matrix, John Wick, Bill and Ted, Point Break and more. But he’s also a star meme. You might see memes of Sad Keanu, Sad Keanu in a helmet, or walking in Slow Motion Keanu. But Reeves himself admits he found his ability to meme baffling, he told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Monday.

“Why do you think you are easy to remember?” Colbert asked. “There are a lot of Keanu memes out there.”

Reeves put his chin in his hand, and Ted “Theodore” gave Logan’s answer.

“I have no proof, sir,” he said, as the studio audience laughed.

Colbert attempted to answer his question, suggesting that while Reeves has his own distinct personality, people find it easy to overlay his images with their own meaning. This inspired the main character Mimi-Man to launch a version of Bill Withers’ hit “Lean on Me” with the lyrics changed to “Meme on Me”.

Earlier in the interview, Colbert showed the Sad Keanu meme, which shows Reeves sitting alone on a bench eating, noting that a similar painting appears in the 2020 Reeves comic book, BRZRKR.

“I’m just eating a sandwich, man!” Reeves laughed. “I was thinking! I had some things going on! I was hungry!”

He said BRZRKR artist Ron Garney did the devotional art without notifying Reeves, adding, “So I guess he’s kinda dead.”

Reeves stars in Resurrection Matrix, Which is coming to theaters and broadcasting this month.
