It’s the most beautiful time of the year! Unless of course you have one of those impossible-to-buy on your holiday shopping list. What do you get for a person who has everything? Or how about a hostess gift that the host will actually love? Well, entertainment reporter, TV personality, professional wrestler, author, and actress Maria Menounos has some ideas.
We were lucky enough to sit down with Menounos recently and chat about all about the holidays and her new holiday movie Lifetime, holiday fix. Ahead, you’ll see where Menounos shared amazing gift ideas to pick up from two of her favorite stores, TJ Maxx and Marshall’s, and also gave us some holiday party hosting tips we can’t wait to try.
Is learning: How do you celebrate the holidays this year?
Maria Menounos: Well, I am currently here in Connecticut with my parents. So on Thanksgiving we were here with relatives and family and stuff. Christmas is still a little in the air.
millimeter: A potential trip to Disney is in the works because I feel like Christmas is a little different this year without my mom, so I’m trying to think of what the happiest thing I can do is Disney. I don’t know if I’ll get in the last minute, but we’ll try.
SK: Let’s say you forgot to get a gift for someone on your list, and you need to pick out something cool at the last minute. First, where do you go for a gift and what are you going to bring them?
millimeter: OK. Well, first of all, that’s why I’ve partnered with TJ Maxx and Marshall’s because they are the perfect place to get everything you need. So if I forgot to get someone a gift, I might just go online and start looking at it. This depends on the person. You can buy a comfortable blanket and there is the amazing percussion massager that people are interested in now. You know, there are storage gadgets like makeup, nail polish, and things like that. It depends on who they are, but that’s why both TJ Maxx and Marshall make it easy to buy for anyone on your list.
SK: What would you suggest to the person on your list who already has it all? They always seem to be the hardest to buy.
millimeter: I go with the things I know they will always need. You always want to feel snug, even something like a cozy robe or blanket. You can’t get enough of these. When you choose something comfortable, you get that instant feeling of happiness, so no one will get angry about that or about the candles. Towels are great too. Getting someone a new set of towels, a robe, and candles to give them that feeling of sanctuary is great especially if someone has had a really tough year.
SK: How would you describe your personal holiday decor?
millimeter: I’m getting crazier every year with my personal holiday style and I love it. I like to raise it every year. This tree, which we got last year, is 14 feet tall. I wanted to confuse my father. Again, after I had a hard time, I was like, let’s beat them. Let’s make them feel really good and soulful, but I decorate them sporadically. I don’t want it to be too much, so whatever I decorate should be elegant and rather simple. We have another tree in the hallway, a really nice white tree. It’s just the colored lights. I brought some reindeer this year to put in the front garden.
SK: We’re still in the middle of a pandemic, but now that people have been vaccinated and gatherings are starting to become more important this year, people are hosting holiday parties. Do you have any tips for people hosting parties to make the whole process easier?
millimeter: I’m throwing a holiday party so I’m in the midst of figuring it all out. So we make sure everyone gets tested before they come. But you know, for me, I love partying, so I did an entire episode on my podcast where I made party tips because I think you have to have a really good vibe when you have a party. You want the right music, you want the right lighting, the lights dim, you need to light some candles. I also make fresh donuts all day for my party and this year it’s going to be themed because I have a holiday movie coming out on December 11 called holiday fix So I put them in the movie. Little things like that kind of add a little touch and then the decor of course. I went to TJ Maxx and bought this beautiful marble cheese plate with little handles that look really nice on the counter and glassware for serving my cocktails. You want her to look really pretty. You don’t spend a lot to make it look great, but the visuals are important.
SK: Let’s say, you know, instead of hosting, you’re going to a party. Do you have a favorite gift or hostess?
millimeter: Yes, I love things like that, I would love to have some kind of housewarming gift to give that is useful for the party that you might use in the atmosphere of the party that day. So a great cheese plate or some great wine or cocktail glasses, aprons are always fun and festive. I think if you could make a bottle of wine too, you know, you’d never go wrong with a bottle of wine, but for me, I like to do something different.
SK: Are there any traditional holiday foods that you absolutely can’t stomach?
millimeter: I love food! I don’t know if there is anything I don’t like.
SK: Is there one you always look forward to?
millimeter: Yes, anything I do! I make a really great holiday meal so thank you mom for teaching me how to cook. Whether it’s, you know, Greek cheesecakes or I make the most moist turkey ever. I make a great crabmeat pie too. Buffalo chicken pasta and other cheese are good.
SK: Well, last question for you and it’s easy to fill in the blanks. Nothing says holidays like ______.
millimeter: Seeing someone smiling.
