In a 2009 interview with SPIN, Marilyn Manson spoke about ex-partner Evan Rachel Wood.
He called her 158 times after their breakup and fantasized about her “about smashing her skull with a sledgehammer”.
In February 2021, Wood publicly accused Manson of sexual assault during their time together.
Marilyn Manson told Spin magazine in 2009 that he called actor Evan Rachel Wood 158 times and fantasized about him daily “about smashing her skull with a sledgehammer” after their breakup.
Manson was promoting his last album at the time, “The High End of a Low” and touched upon his relationship with the “Westworld” actor. They started dating in 2007, when Wood was 19 and Manson was 38, and they were engaged in 2010 before calling it off.
In the interview, Manson describes an apparent split between the pair in 2008, a time period in which he claimed to have suffered from depression and a sense of betrayal by Wood.
“And every time I called her that day — I called her 158 times — she took a razor blade and cut myself on my face or in my hands,” Manson says in the interview, claiming he told her, “I want you physically to see what I did.”
Manson said the breakup helped inspire the album: “That damage is part of it, and the song ‘I Want to Kill You Like They Do in The Movies’ is about my fantasies,” he told SPIN. “I have fantasies every day about smashing her skull with a sledgehammer.”
On February 1, 2021, Wood Manson publicly identified her as her abuser in an Instagram post. For years, Wood has campaigned in support of survivors of domestic and sexual violence and has spoken about her own experience.
Her post marked the first time she had named the alleged abuser.
“The name of the person who abused me is Brian Warner, also known to the world as Marilyn Manson,” Wood said in the post.
“He started grooming me when I was a teenager and he abused me horribly for years,” Wood said. “I have been brainwashed and manipulated into submission. I have ended up living in fear of retaliation, slander, or extortion. I am here to expose this dangerous man and summon the many industries that enabled him before he destroys more lives. I stand with many victims who will not remain silent anymore.”
According to documents filed in March as part of an ongoing guardianship battle between Wood and ex-husband Jamie Bell, Wood said she had installed bulletproof windows, steel doors and a security fence around her Los Angeles home because she feared her ex-fiancé Manson would do so. She attacks her family after she accuses him of abuse, DailyMail.com reports.
Manson is now the center for domestic violence investigations at the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, which opened after Wood came forward in February.
Since then, at least 16 women have publicly accused Manson of physical and sexual assault. Four women sued him for sexual assault and battery.
Insider has reached out to Manson’s attorney for comment.
