Marvel Exec Declares Jon Bernthal the Perfect Punisher

Marvel’s Joe Quesada explains why Jon Bernthal was perfect for the role of Frank Castle and his anti-hero egos The Punisher.

Quesada said about Berthal’s portrayal of the character in an interview with Prop Store posted on YouTube. “It’s very easy, I think, to portray a character like that in a very one-dimensional way. But first, he had scripts that were incredibly deep and rich, and John brought a lot into Frank’s character.”

Marvel exec recalled one scene in particular, which he described as the moment Berthal came to his feet as The Punisher thanks to a combination of his performance and his Steve Lightfoot script.

“I won’t spoil it,” Kisada explained. But there is a moment in the last episode of season one (“Memento Mori”) – where [Bernthal] He reads a line – and he reads it under the camera tube. This is Frank Castle I’ve never seen before but it was very familiar at the same time. That’s a credit to Steve and his team, as well as to John and the way he brought that home.”


Before starring in his own series, Berthal debuted as The Punisher in Netflix’s second season reckless. The actor recently opened up about his decision to accept the role of Punisher in the first place, stating that he was inspired by both the talent he saw on display and his relationship with the Castle character.

“She’s a character that resonates so deeply and deeply with the comic book community, with the law enforcement community, and with the military community,” Berthal said at the time. “These are communities that I care about a lot. I’ve looked at playing Frank as, you know, a real responsibility to those communities. And if they’re behind that and they think I got it right, that’s humbling and I’m grateful for that.”
