The 25 Best TV Shows of the 21st Century, According to BBC Culture

As we’re now nearly a quarter of the way into the 21st century – and the TV industry has developed rapidly during that time – BBC Culture decided to discover what experts consider the greatest to date.

After asking “critics, journalists, academics, and industry icons” from around the world to rank their 10 favorite shows released in 2000 or later, the publication used this data to come up with a comprehensive list of the top 100. In terms of genre, the Top 25 has something for everyone: like fantasy epics game of Thronesblack comedy like Fleabag And under six feet, like period drama the crown And dead wood, and more. Topping the list are three critically acclaimed dramas that have been so widely watched that you might get scolded if you mention you didn’t see them: the wireAnd mad Men, And Too bad.

If you are wondering where soprano Landed, it’s not on the list – not because it’s not beloved by critics, but because the list was limited to series that premiered in 2000 or later. That’s why you won’t see friends on the list as well. American version of the deskIn the meantime, it’s already in the top 100 — but it’s at number 39, 30 places higher than its predecessor in the UK.

In short, there are plenty of opportunities to disagree with the rundown, which is what BBC Culture encourages you to do. If you share your hot posts on social media, tag @bbc_culture (on Instagram and Twitter) and hashtag #TVOfTheCentury to join the speech. If you thought the menu consisted mostly of English language shows created by males, you are right. In fact, the BBC calculated that 79 of the top 100 performances were given by men, and 92 of them were primarily in English – statistics that “[reflect] Significant biases” and “speak to systemic inequality in the industry.”
