The last time we got a new Batman on the big screen, it was plugged into a pre-existing franchise – Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne that counted in Zack Snyder man of Steel tracking Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. For better or worse, he was always part of a bigger picture, promptly pitching against Henry Cavill’s Supes in a showdown and then moving on to the Justice League. But this is not Matt Reeves’ next plan Batman, and presenting Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman is completely different. For the first time since Christopher Nolan changed the rules of the game Batman Begins, we are meeting a completely new pat in itself.
As the first self-contained Batman “Within ten years, we hope to be able to lay a foundation on which you can build stories,” says Producer Dylan Clark. empire from where Batman sitting. That’s not to say there aren’t things planned on the sidelines of a Reeves movie – there’s a slate of HBO Max spin-offs in the works, including one set on Gotham PD, and one set to include Colin Farrell’s Penguin. But if no one has talked about crossovers or specific sequel plans yet, Pattinson had thoughts on where he’d take his copy of Bruce Wayne if future installments came true. “It kind of made a map of where Bruce’s psychology would grow more than the other two films,” he says. “I’d like to do that.”
As for Reeves, he’s focused on him right now Batman, hoping to deliver the Dark Knight story that seemed so special to so many others who have come before. “I’ve made every movie ever as my passion project,” he explains. “That’s more than that, because when you know something was done so well before, and you’re so loved, you can’t just walk in and sleep in it. You have to shoot for something. We’re trying to make our mark on this.”
