The best film performances of 2021

Andrew Garfield, Tag, put… Boom!

There is just something about Andrew Garfield Tag, put… Boom! I can not stop thinking. It perfectly captures the spirit of every desperate theater kid I’ve met in my life—that weird combination of sheer confidence, deep social awkwardness, and an almost pressing need to live for your art, man. Garfield doesn’t portray that spirit much because he lets it emanate from his bones. The question of whether you liked its aspiring playwright Jonathan Larson is laughable; The big, chaotic, blooming impulse to do something, Any thing, trying to creatively connect with others is what radiates from the performance, and Garfield’s unabashed passion for photography shines so bright that it almost eclipses the film itself. Talk about a supply stopper. [Alex McLevy]
