‘The Dr. Oz Show’ to end amid Mehmet Oz’s Senate run, daughter Daphne Oz to take over with ‘The Good Dish’

The doctor is out.

Sony Pictures Television confirmed on Monday that it will be retiring from “The Dr. Oz Show” after 13 seasons.

Instead, the health advice talk show will be replaced by a new series co-hosted by Dr. Mehmet Oz’s daughter, Daphne Oz, titled The Good Dish. “Top Chef” judge Gail Simmons and Next Food Star winner Jamaica Pessoa will join the Emmy winner as hosts.

“The Dr. Oz Show” began airing in 2009 after the famous heart surgeon rose to fame after appearing on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

In November, the 61-year-old announced that he is running for the Pennsylvania open seat in the US Senate as a Republican. Oz will bring his name recognition and fortune to a broadly open race that is expected to be among the most competitive in the country and could determine control of the Senate in next year’s elections.

In a one-minute video message on social media, a longtime New Jersey resident presented himself as the kind of advocate for people’s health, who “has taken upon the medical establishment arguing against exorbitant drugs and high medical bills” and ready to fight a government he said has wronged him. “As a heart surgeon, I know how precious life is,” Oz said. “Pennsylvania needs a governor who puts America first, someone who can reignite our divine spark, fight bravely for freedom and say it like it is.”

A campaign aide said Oz was planning to put his fortune to work right away, and broadcast the video to television screens across Pennsylvania as part of a multimillion-dollar ad purchase. Oz told fellow Pennsylvania Republicans about his plans, and his campaign said he has lived and voted in Pennsylvania since last year.

Oz was born in Cleveland, Ohio, to the father of a heart surgeon who immigrated from Turkey. He attended private high school in Delaware and Harvard University as an undergraduate, also played football there, and served in the Turkish army to maintain his dual citizenship.

Oz’s wife is also the daughter of a prominent heart surgeon, and the two met in Philadelphia through their parents when Oz attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania.

To be a senator, the constitutional qualification is to be a resident of the state when elected.

The Senate previously decided that the person elected to it must have some type of residence in the state or at least the intention to establish a residence there, according to a 2015 Congressional Research Service analysis.
